General Traffic and Parking Rules in Norway

Welcome to Flakstad!

Norway has national traffic and parking regulations that apply everywhere – including when you visit Flakstad. To ensure safe travel for everyone, we kindly ask you to familiarize yourself with the most important rules before driving on our roads.

Basic Traffic Rules

  • Drive with care: All road users must drive considerately, be alert, and act cautiously to avoid danger or harm, and to prevent unnecessary obstruction or disturbance of other traffic.
  • Respect local residents: Road users must also show consideration for those who live along or near the roads.

Parking

  • What is considered parking?
Parking refers to any stopping of a vehicle, even if the driver remains inside.
Exceptions: The shortest possible stop for picking up or dropping off passengers or loading/unloading goods.
  • Use of the roadway:
    • Drivers must use the carriageway.
    • Driving on sidewalks, pedestrian paths, shoulders, or ditches is prohibited.
    • Only cyclists are allowed to use cycle paths and cycle lanes, and must stay on the right side of the road.

No Stopping and No Parking Areas

It is prohibited to stop:

  • In blind curves, tunnels, hilltops, or any other area with poor visibility.
  • In an intersection or within 5 meters of an intersection (measured from where the curb, lane marking, or edge of the road begins to curve).
  • Fully or partially on sidewalks, pedestrian paths, or cycle paths.
  • On or close to pedestrian crossings or bicycle crossings (closer than 5 meters before such crossings).
  • In bus lanes, carpool lanes, or bicycle lanes (except for buses/trams at bus stops).
  • At or within 20 meters of a bus, tram, or taxi stop sign.
(Exception: Picking up or dropping off passengers if it does not obstruct buses, trams, or taxis.)

Parking is not permitted

  • in front of driveways or entrances/exits
  • in pedestrian streets
  • in residential/shared streets (unless designated parking spaces are marked)
  • on priority roads with a speed limit over 50 km/h (parking on the carriageway is prohibited)

Traffic Signs

  • Traffic signs follow international standards.
  • Additional text (subtext) is in Norwegian only. Use a translation tool if needed to avoid missing important information.
  • Check the signage where you park. Always follow the posted signs to avoid illegal parking.
  • Pay attention to time limits. Many areas have restricted parking durations, and it is the driver's responsibility to ensure the vehicle is parked legally.
  • Respect private signage. Do not park in areas marked as private property or where no-parking signs have been put up by the landowner.

Use of Passing Places

  • It is prohibited to park in passing places—areas where the roadway has been widened to allow vehicles to pass each other. Parking in such areas is considered illegal and may result in a fine and possible towing of the vehicle.
  • Always keep to the right and wait for oncoming traffic at passing places.
  • Many small road widenings are only intended for passing, not for parking.

Use of Signals and Lights

  • Unnecessary or inconsiderate use of horns or light signals is prohibited.
  • Hazard warning lights should only be used in emergencies, not to stop and take photos.
  • Always signal clearly when turning or making significant changes to your road position.
  • Emergency vehicles use flashing blue lights (and a siren if needed).
  • Roadwork vehicles that need to diverge from traffic rules must use flashing yellow lights to warn others.

Important Emergency Numbers

  • Fire: 110
  • Police: 112
  • Ambulance: 113

Other important services:

  • Viking Roadside Assistance (car recovery): +47 915 34 120
  • Air Ambulance App:
We recommend downloading the Hjelp 113 app, which can send your exact location directly to emergency services in case of an emergency.

📍 Tip!

Please remember to drive carefully on our narrow roads and always respect passing places, especially during the busy tourist season.
