General Traffic and Parking Rules in NorwayWelcome to Flakstad!Norway has national traffic and parking regulations that apply everywhere – including when you visit Flakstad. To ensure safe travel for everyone, we kindly ask you to familiarize yourself with the most important rules before driving on our roads.Basic Traffic RulesDrive with care: All road users must drive considerately, be alert, and act cautiously to avoid danger or harm, and to prevent unnecessary obstruction or disturbance of other traffic.Respect local residents: Road users must also show consideration for those who live along or near the roads.ParkingWhat is considered parking?Parking refers to any stopping of a vehicle, even if the driver remains inside.Exceptions: The shortest possible stop for picking up or dropping off passengers or loading/unloading goods.Use of the roadway:Drivers must use the carriageway.Driving on sidewalks, pedestrian paths, shoulders, or ditches is prohibited.Only cyclists are allowed to use cycle paths and cycle lanes, and must stay on the right side of the road.No Stopping and No Parking AreasIt is prohibited to stop:In blind curves, tunnels, hilltops, or any other area with poor visibility.In an intersection or within 5 meters of an intersection (measured from where the curb, lane marking, or edge of the road begins to curve).Fully or partially on sidewalks, pedestrian paths, or cycle paths.On or close to pedestrian crossings or bicycle crossings (closer than 5 meters before such crossings).On motorways, expressways, or their on/off ramps.Within 5 meters of a level crossing (railroad).In bus lanes, carpool lanes, or bicycle lanes (except for buses/trams at bus stops).At or within 20 meters of a bus, tram, or taxi stop sign.(Exception: Picking up or dropping off passengers if it does not obstruct buses, trams, or taxis.)It is prohibited to park:In front of entrances or exits to properties.On pedestrian streets.In residential streets (shared zones) outside of specially marked parking areas.On priority roads (main roads) with speed limits above 50 km/h (no parking on the carriageway).Use of Passing PlacesIt is forbidden to park across the full width of a passing place.Always keep to the right and wait for oncoming traffic at passing places.Many small road widenings are only intended for passing, not for parking.Use of Signals and LightsUnnecessary or inconsiderate use of horns or light signals is prohibited.Hazard warning lights should only be used in emergencies, not to stop and take photos.Always signal clearly when turning or making significant changes to your road position.Emergency vehicles use flashing blue lights (and a siren if needed).Roadwork vehicles that need to diverge from traffic rules must use flashing yellow lights to warn others.Important Emergency NumbersFire: 110Police: 112Ambulance: 113Other important services:Viking Roadside Assistance (car recovery): +47 915 34 120Air Ambulance App:We recommend downloading the Hjelp 113 app, which can send your exact location directly to emergency services in case of an emergency.📍 Tip!Please remember to drive carefully on our narrow roads and always respect passing places, especially during the busy tourist season.
